Teachers
1.f you are a teacher of color, embrace it. Embrace that you are a walking example of what it looks like to be a person of color in a teaching role. Most students of color are not use to seeing someone that looks like them also teach them. Use this to your advantage. Build a personal relationship through the common culture ground.
2. Empower your student of color to feel successful in your class. If he or she does something positive reaffirm them with a public comment such as, “I loved how Pablo thought about this problem” Of course you want to do this with all your students, but often we forget to do this. We only remember the students who participated or raised their hand. Which often is not a student of color. Which is why it is important that we go out of our way to recognize their work. |
3.Push your students to do math. Push them to fail at math. Push them not to count the times they got a problem wrong, but instead count the times they did not give up on the problem. When a student arrives at a right answer ask them, "How many times did you attempt it?" Celebrate that number. That higher the number the higher the "Hoorah"
4. Encourage them to come to tutoring. To ask for help. To help others. Build an empathy math team with your students. Create a space where you can repeat steps 1-3 5. If you ever think that all is lost in equity and mathematics, then start back at 1. 6. There are beautiful things being done at HTH regarding math. growth mindset, and student agency. Check out some of their work, improvers guides, tips, and advice the HTH math team are doing! |
