The Cardboard Catastrophe was a math project that allowed students explore and experiment with surface area and volume. This project was student driven. The Idea, the process and even the exhibition; the entire project was their idea.
The students began by exploring and learning about surface area and volume of 2D shapes. After students were comfortable enough with the idea and the practice, we decided to take our math 3D. Students designed a 3D object using common shapes. First we drew it, and after adjusting measurements and dimensions we created our creatures and shapes with cardboard. Every student was responsible for creating their own object. They ranged from dinosaurs, to disney characters, to even even some original masterpieces. Every design was unique, authentic and original. From the design all the way to the building process, students found their own measurements and surface area and volume. I must say I had a lot of fun doing this project and I look forward and doing it again.
